The story of Czech glass beads begins in the 3rd century BC. Because the area of Northern Bohemia was rich in quartz & potash, Celtic craftsmen produced the first glass beads there. By the 16th century Czech Glass beads were being sold around the world. In the early 1900's the area's glass making went through many changes: becoming industrialized, nationalized, banned and finally sold off to far Eastern manufacturers. Hence, by 1995, the making of Czech pressed glass beads had reverted to being a cottage industry.
The traditional use of the Dragon fly motif, symbolizing rebirth, transformation and change, with Czech Glass beads, echoes the path of the craft itself, reminding us of the importance of adapting to the different opportunities life presents.
